INTRODUCTION

Many of us, from time to time, find ourselves reflecting on our childhood, remembering the crazy stories that shaped us as kids and young adults. I know I do. When I do, I often drift back to the early 1960s and 1970s—a magical time and place where my family experienced countless adventures that have become legendary within our circle.

DAD
Thomas Archie Sawyer was his given name at birth, but by the time he passed away in 1994, he had accumulated a variety of nicknames. In the early years of our family, he was undoubtedly the central figure.
SUNDAY SCHOOL
This story highlights Dad’s service to the church. A deeply religious man, Dad had promised God that if his life was spared in the aftermath of a plane crash, he would never miss church again. It was a promise he kept faithfully for the rest of his life.
Mother

Mama was born in Hedley, Texas, in 1924 to Papa and Jessie Adamson. She had three sisters and two brothers. Her family were farmers and lived through the Dust Bowl of the 1930s, an event that displaced many farmers of that era and had a profound effect on their livelihood.

Red Dog &The Great Turkey Heist
I have many great memories of Thanksgiving dinners, but none stands out quite like the one in 1972. My brother Mike had come home for the holiday with his wife, Darby.
The Geese
Mom had an affinity for the domestic geese that lived across the street. At the time, she and Dad had moved into the house my grandfather had built on Greystone. The geese belonged to the Samsons, a family that could only be described as a mix of rednecks and hicks. To this day, their little farm looks almost exactly as it did in the 1960s.
The Fire
It wasn’t surprising that my mother, coming from a family of farmers, continued to keep a garden wherever she lived. As long as she had pets and a garden, she was a happy camper. Our home on Highland Street was no exception. Though her garden was modest, she filled it with some of the best vegetables I’d ever tasted.
My First House Fight

I grew accustomed to fights within our house at an early age. These weren’t just limited to our family; our next-door neighbors and even my friends’ homes seemed to host their fair share of brawls. But these weren’t typical fistfights.
